I have blogged about the very creative Nagi Noda recently here.
Today we find out that this extremely talented young lady has passed away! So tragic. We will miss her creative energy and output, and we will continued to be inspired by her work. Please check out her site and help remember this young talent’s life. [ scroll down ]
If you are not familiar with her amazing body of work, please take a moment to view it here.
Her personal diary is also available on the page, which documented her life up until a few months ago.

Recently my mother has gotten into painting,.. or perhaps, I have gotten her into painting? At least I think I had and influence on her
. I studied painting in school, and could probably use more “study” but ended up focusing more in Graphic design than Fine Art. Though I DO think Fine Art suites me better overall.
So I feel very refreshed to see my mother working in paint, and it keeps me connected to that medium as I get to conversate with her about the work and give hints and tips as she’s going .
So now when I see painting stuff, I think of my mom. Hence this blog that I spotted.

I love the take on modern settings and subject matter. I think it’s always been this thing with painting that ” isn’t painting “DEAD” “? this idea that” the medium is no longer relevant” is now soo pase, that it’s not even a relevant conversation now really anyway. With CGI, Graphic design, 3d visuals and photo-realistic CGI environments, everything visual can and almost HAS been done. BUT that’s not the point really, and here, we see painting is alive and well, and has gained new relevance , as our visual landscape changes around us, in everyday life, so paint and every other medium is here to interpret it.
I enjoy the idea that the mediums really never die, they are just a specific motif of artistic expression that interprets reality in it’s own special way that no other can really get at. Painting, as well as other mediums are now so rare, but are more valuable because of the labor involved, raw skill, thoughtfulness, and intimacy that they present. Made by hand, by someone, sitting in front of the work, for hours, and all the personal appeal to it. There is a great deal to be said about what these traditional mediums mean now in a society in which they are no longer a necessity ,but rather an art by choice, and maybe the message is in the medium, that speaks of humanity, still using mud and pigment to make pictures of life, by hand. I certainly hope that immediate connectivity , and tactile sensibility never loses it’s place in our society . Here’s to the painters, for giving us that gift.
What do you think about the art of painting in our time, and how can it continue to be relevant or to be a medium that continues through time? What is it about painting that makes it such a persistent medium? [ comment button at the top ]
