French automobile brand Renault are showing a range of electric concept cars at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (Frankfurt Motor Show) in Germany this week.

Called Renault ZE, the range is composed of a city car, hatchback, saloon and van.

The cars are designed to recharge in three minutes.

Renault envisage that spare batteries will be kept in the home or in workplaces, and that garages will adopt drop-off points for recycling batteries.

Renault plan to launch the range commercially from 2011.

Renault to launch electric vehicles in 2011

For Renault, the electric vehicle is the real long-term solution to today’s environmental and noise pollution issues. Technological innovations now make it possible to mass market an electric vehicle at reasonable cost.

In addition, changes in vehicle use make electric cars ideal for the majority of trips, with 80% of Europeans currently driving less than 60 km a day.

Renault will bring its customers a complete range of electric vehicles by as early as 2011. Their design will be largely inspired by the concept cars revealed at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show: Kangoo Z.E. Concept announces a light commercial vehicle, especially designed for professionals, that will be available for the 1st semester of 2011.

Fluence Z.E. Concept prefigures an electric version of a family car, that will be launched first in Israel (1st semester 2011) and then in other countries. By mid 2012, a full-electric city car (close to Zoe Z.E. Concept) measuring less than four meters long and with five seats, ideal for commuting. Also in 2nd-half of 2012, a new type of urban vehicle close to Twizy Z.E. Concept (a passenger can seat behind the driver).

The new car for everyday use

For Renault and its customers, electric cars have to be practical, attractive and reassuring: Electric vehicles will retail at the same price as equivalent diesel models (without the battery, which is rented); Running costs are roughly 20% lower than an equivalent combustion vehicle since electricity costs much less than petrol (around €1 per 100 km);

Maintenance costs are half those of an equivalent combustion vehicle because electric motors require less servicing; Electric motors are the equal of gasoline and diesel cars in terms of performance. Regarding acceleration, for example, an electric motor delivers all of its power as soon as it pulls away; Electric cars are easily recharged at home, at special terminals in parking lot areas and at “quick drop” rapid exchange stations.

Electric vehicles are in phase with current public issues. They are silent and, because they emit no CO2, NOx or particulate matter, they also respect the environment.

AMSTERDAM – It’s not green cheese, but it might as well be.
The Dutch national museum said Thursday that one of its prized possessions, a rock supposedly brought back from the moon by U.S. astronauts, is just a piece of petrified wood.
Rijksmuseum spokeswoman Xandra van Gelder, who oversaw the investigation that proved the piece was a fake, said the museum will keep it anyway as a curiosity.
“It’s a good story, with some questions that are still unanswered,” she said. “We can laugh about it.”
The museum acquired the rock after the death of former Prime Minister Willem Drees in 1988. Drees received it as a private gift on Oct. 9, 1969 from then-U.S. ambassador J. William Middendorf during a visit by the three Apollo 11 astronauts, part of their “Giant Leap” goodwill tour after the first moon landing.
Middendorf, who lives in Rhode Island, told Dutch broadcaster NOS news that he had gotten it from the U.S. State Department, but couldn’t recall the exact details.

“I do remember that (Drees) was very interested in the little piece of stone,” the NOS quoted Middendorf as saying. “But that it’s not real, I don’t know anything about that.”
He could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.
The U.S. Embassy in the Hague said it was investigating the matter.
The museum had vetted the moon rock with a phone call to NASA, Van Gelder said.
She said the space agency told the museum then that it was possible the Netherlands had received a rock: NASA gave moon rocks to more than 100 countries in the early 1970s, but those were from later missions.
“Apparently no one thought to doubt it, since it came from the prime minister’s collection,” Van Gelder said.
The rock is not usually on display; the museum is primarily known for its paintings and other works of fine art by masters such as Rembrandt.
A jagged fist-size stone with reddish tints, it was mounted and placed above a plaque that said, “With the compliments of the Ambassador of the United States of America … to commemorate the visit to The Netherlands of the Apollo-11 astronauts.” The plaque does not specify that the rock came from the moon’s surface
It was given at the opening of an exhibition on space exploration.
It was on show in 2006 and a space expert informed the museum it was unlikely NASA would have given away any moon rocks three months after Apollo returned to Earth.
Researchers from Amsterdam’s Free University said they could see at a glance the rock was probably not from the moon. They followed the initial appraisal up with extensive testing.
“It’s a nondescript, pretty-much-worthless stone,” Geologist Frank Beunk concluded in an article published by the museum.
He said the rock, which the museum at one point insured for more than half a million dollars, was worth no more than euro50 ($70).
Van Gelder said one important unanswered question is why Drees was given the stone. He was 83 years old in 1969 and had been out of office for 11 years. On the other hand, he was the country’s elder statesman, the prime minister who helped the Netherlands rebuild after World War II.
Middendorf was treasurer of the Republic National Committee from 1965 until 1969, when President Richard Nixon dispatched him to the Netherlands

Honey bee VS. Cell phone

Honey bee’s are dying, due to Cell phone towers.  Who’s gotta go?

Man vs. Bee  Do we love sound of the buzz  of our cell phones more than the buzz of honey bee’s?  We might be faced with making that choice as the survival of the Bee’s lives are at steak.  So is the lucritive Honey industry. Honey money might dry up as fast our phone minutes. Does this mean we tear the towers down, till we come up with better technology? There will be job losses either way, in the Telecommunications industry as well as the food industry. But we can make better technology, can we ever bring back the Bee’s?  Obviously this is a serious issue. The tiny bee is more bio-technology that we could ever invent. What do we do now that the facts are in?

Mobile towers are posing a threat to honey bees in Kerala with electromagnetic radiation from mobile towers and cell phones having the potential to kill worker bees that go out to collect nectar from flowers, says a study.

In one of his experiments he found that when a mobile phone was kept near a beehive it resulted in collapse of the colony in five to 10 days, with the worker bees failing to return home, leaving the hives with just queens, eggs and hive-bound immature bees

In 2006 the University of Landau did a pilot study on the non-thermal effects of radio frequency (“RF”) on honey bees (Apis mellifera carnica) and suggested that when bee hives have DECT cordless phone base stations embedded in them, the close-range electromagnetic field (“EMF”) may reduce the ability of bees to return to their hive; they also noticed a slight reduction in honeycomb weight in treated colonies.^[76] In the course of their study, one half of their colonies broke down, including some of their controls which did not have DECT base stations embedded in them.

In 2009, a study which focused on furthering the investigation into the effects, if any, of cordless, mobil phones, cell towers, or wifi, interference, on CCD, presented new findings which suggested a connection between CCD and Electromagnetic technology. ^[81][82]
